Much of the Tameside housing stock — the terraces around Ashton-under-Lyne, Hyde, Stalybridge, Denton, Droylsden and Dukinfield — was built between 1880 and 1910 with stair widths of 700–800mm. A standard stairlift folds to around 320–340mm, so the right slimline lift leaves enough room to walk past safely.

What counts as a "narrow" staircase?
| Stair width (wall to spindle) | What's likely possible |
|---|---|
| 800mm+ | Any straight lift fits; standard seat is fine |
| 700–800mm | Slimline straight lift — most Tameside terraces |
| 650–700mm | Slimline + perch seat usually clears |
| Under 650mm | Survey required — sometimes possible, sometimes not |
The figure that matters is the usable width at the narrowest point of the run, usually halfway up. Skirting, dado rails, a landing radiator and a bulky newel post can all shave 30–60mm off the headline width.
Tameside streets we work in regularly
- Ashton-under-Lyne — late-Victorian terraces around the town centre, Smallshaw, Hurst
- Hyde — Gee Cross, Newton, Godley terrace streets
- Stalybridge — older mill workers' terraces along the Tame valley
- Denton & Droylsden — inter-war semis with quarter-turns (often curved, not straight)
- Dukinfield — Victorian and Edwardian terraces with tight downstairs hallways
Perch seats for very tight stairs
If a standard seat won't fold tight enough, a perch seat lets the user lean rather than sit fully — it reduces the folded footprint significantly and is a common solution in narrow Tameside terraces. We confirm suitability at the free home survey.
