Stairlift repairs across Greater Manchester with 24-hour emergency callout and a typical arrival window of 2–4 hours in standard hours. We diagnose and repair the full range of common faults — motors, sensors, batteries, brakes, control boards, swivels and footrest mechanisms — on every major make of straight, curved and reconditioned lift.
When to call out a repair
Stop using the lift and call straight away if you notice:
- Brakes failing to hold the chair securely
- Obstruction or footrest sensors not responding
- Emergency-stop button unresponsive
- Seatbelt latch failing
- Visible cracks in the rail or loose brackets
- Any burning smell, sparking or shock from the controls
These are safety-critical faults — they need an engineer before the lift is used again.
Performance issues (slower travel, squeaking, a flat-feeling battery, a faulty display) aren't safety-critical and can wait for a normal-hours appointment. If in doubt, call 0161 330 5544 and we'll triage over the phone.
Common faults we fix
Complete power loss
Almost always one of three things: a tripped breaker, a charger that's been knocked out of its socket, or a flat back-up battery. Quick checks to try first:
- Test the wall socket with another device.
- Confirm the lift is parked on its charging point and the connectors are clean.
- Locate the isolator (usually under the seat or on the carriage), switch off for 30 seconds, then back on.
If it still won't start, we diagnose internal fuses, control-board faults and charger failures on site.
Obstruction sensor false trips
Sensors stop the lift if anything enters the safety zone. Dust on a sensor lens, a curtain or hanging clothes hooked on a banister, or a pet bed near the foot of the stairs are the usual culprits. Wipe sensor lenses with a dry, lint-free cloth, vacuum around them, and clear the surrounding area. If false trips continue, the sensors need professional recalibration.
Battery and charging issues
Symptoms: shorter back-up runs, low-battery warnings even after a full overnight charge, or the lift only working while plugged in. Most stairlift batteries last 3–5 years. We test under load, replace if capacity is below spec, and check the charger output is delivering proper voltage.
Motor, drive and brake faults
Jerky movement, unusual noise, slow climbs and unexpected stops point to motor or drive-system wear. We carry common motor and drive parts on the van, and the work usually completes in a single visit.
Control-board and sensor electronics
Modern lifts show diagnostic error codes (E-codes for electrical, M-codes for mechanical, S-codes for sensors). We read the full fault history during the visit, which often reveals intermittent faults that wouldn't show up on a single test.
Response times
- Standard hours (Mon–Sat, 8am–6pm) — typical arrival 2–4 hours.
- Evenings, Sundays and bank holidays — emergency callout, typical arrival 4–6 hours.
We prioritise calls where the user is stranded upstairs or downstairs, and calls where the fault is safety-critical.
What a callout costs
- Standard callout fee — £85–£120 in normal hours, £150–£200 out of hours, including diagnosis on arrival.
- Parts — quoted up-front before any work goes ahead. Typical examples: battery pack £80–£150, control board £200–£400, mechanical adjustment £50–£200, sensor £45–£75.
You'll never be charged for parts or labour without seeing the price first. Many simple faults are fixed in the callout window with no parts needed.
Repair vs replace
We'll tell you honestly when a repair stops making sense. As a rule of thumb:
- Repair — lifts under 8 years old with a single failed component.
- Repair or service plan — lifts 8–12 years old with isolated, predictable faults.
- Replace — lifts 12+ years old with multiple faults, or where the rail is corroded or out of spec. A new straight stairlift fits from £1,995; a reconditioned from £995.
Prevention: annual servicing
A yearly service catches most faults before they become callouts. We cover servicing & repairs for every make and model, including lifts we didn't originally install. A typical annual visit includes rail alignment, brake test, lubrication, sensor calibration, emergency-stop test and a full battery capacity check.
Book a repair
Call 0161 330 5544 for emergency repairs across Greater Manchester, or request a callback. Give the make and model if you have it (it's usually on a label under the seat) and a brief description of the fault — it helps us bring the right parts on the first visit.
