Most Manchester terraces — Levenshulme, Longsight, Burnage, Gorton, Openshaw, Salford, Cheetham Hill — were built between 1880 and 1910 with stair widths of 700–800mm between the wall and the spindles. A standard stairlift takes around 300–340mm of that width when folded. The right slimline lift leaves enough room for an able-bodied user to walk past safely.

What counts as a "narrow" staircase?
| Stair width (wall to spindle) | What's likely possible |
|---|---|
| 800mm+ | Any straight lift fits; standard seat is fine |
| 700–800mm | Slimline straight lift — most Manchester terraces |
| 650–700mm | Slimline + perch seat usually clears |
| Under 650mm | Survey required — sometimes possible with a perch seat, sometimes not |
The figure that matters is the usable width measured at the narrowest point of the run, usually halfway up. Skirting, dado rails, radiators on the landing and a bulky newel post can all shave 30–60mm off the headline width.

- 12-month warranty included; annual service from £80
Perch seats for very tight stairs
If a standard seat won't fold tight enough, a perch seat lets the user lean rather than sit fully — it reduces the folded footprint significantly and is a common solution in narrow Salford and Levenshulme terraces.
