Stairlift installation follows a simple 4-stage process: survey, preparation, fitting, handover. A straight stairlift fits in 2–3 hours, often the same week as your survey. A curved stairlift takes 1–3 weeks to manufacture (or 48 hours with our Emergency option) followed by a 3–4 hour fit. No structural work, rewiring or building permits are needed.

Stage 1 — Free home survey

A trained surveyor visits, measures every step, checks headroom and notes anything near the stairs (radiators, doorways, light switches).

  • Straight stairs — 20–30 minutes. Rise, going and width determine rail length.
  • Curved stairs — 45–60 minutes. A digital measuring system captures every angle, turn and landing to make a 3D model used to manufacture your rail.

We also confirm transfer side (left or right), the best rail side, and where the charging unit will sit. You get a written, fixed-price quotation on the day — no obligation.

Stage 2 — Preparation

Hardly anything to do. Clear the staircase of loose items and rugs, and leave about a metre of space at the bottom for tools and rail sections.

You don't need to lift carpet, repaint walls, move heavy furniture, or arrange to stay elsewhere.

Stage 3 — Fitting

Straight stairlifts (2–3 hours)

  1. Mark, drill and bracket — the engineer marks bracket positions, drills pilot holes and secures the rail brackets with torque-controlled drivers.
  2. Rail and motor — rail sections slot onto the brackets and lock together; motor, seat, arms, footrest and seatbelt go on next.
  3. Connect and test — the charging unit plugs into a standard 13-amp socket. Travel limits are programmed, test cycles run, and start/stop and swivel positions are fine-tuned.

The Acorn 130 often fits in under 2 hours due to its modular, pre-assembled design.

Curved stairlifts (3–4 hours)

  1. Rail sections aligned — sections are positioned along the staircase, checked at every curve and landing against the 3D model, then bolted together and secured to the treads.
  2. Chair and motor — installed as for straight, with extra time to set up the powered swivel that rotates the seat at the top and bottom for safe transfers.

The Acorn 180 includes powered swivel and folding footrest as standard.

Stage 4 — Handover

Every install ends with a full handover. The engineer demonstrates the joystick or paddle controls, the remote call controls, folding the seat/arms/footrest, fastening the belt, the obstruction sensors and the isolator switch. You get written operating instructions and warranty documents. If the user wasn't present, a follow-up demonstration visit is free.

What we will and won't do

We will — protect carpets and flooring, remove all packaging, clean the work area, test the lift with the user present where possible, and leave details for servicing & repairs.

We won't — move heavy furniture, carry out electrical rewiring (none is needed), or fit onto unsafe or rotten treads (these must be repaired first).

First 48 hours

Most new users feel fully confident after 2–3 trips. Use the lift for every trip up and down at first to build muscle memory. Park at a charging point when not in use — a full charge gives 15–20 return trips and keeps working through a power cut.

Guarantees

  • 12-month parts and labour warranty on new and reconditioned lifts
  • 30-day installation quality guarantee — any fitting issues fixed at no charge
  • Free follow-up demonstration if extra training is needed
  • Priority warranty call-outs across Greater Manchester
